<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-must-ask-questions-when-buying-a-used-car">Must-ask questions when buying a used car</h2>



<p>Start by asking to see the vehicle history report. This is the car’s diary: accidents, previous owners, mileage consistency and any skeletons in the boot. A reputable seller won’t hesitate.</p>



<p>Next, check for a complete service history. A car that’s been pampered will treat you well; one that’s been ignored might eventually make itself known with a bill you weren’t ready for.</p>



<p>Ask for the MOT history and the pre-sale inspection sheet. This is where you’ll spot recurring advisories or any issues a responsible dealer has already identified.</p>



<p>Don’t be shy and ask plainly whether there are any known mechanical problems. Brakes, suspension, engine quirks – now is the time for honesty and to discover potential issues, not after you’ve already mentally picked out its name.</p>

<p>If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Ultra-cheap listings are the catfish of the car world. Keep an eye out for mismatched paint or panels, which can suggest previous accident damage. And beware of sellers who shrug off the lack of a service history. Paperwork matters and someone claiming they “just never kept the logbook” is giving you your answer.</p>

<p>A little homework goes a long way. Look at what similar preowned cars are selling for across several websites and compare like with like – main dealer, independent or private seller.</p>



<p>A main dealer usually checks cars more thoroughly and has specialist diagnostics to spot issues others might miss. Private sellers are very much “sold as seen,” which can be fine, but the risk is yours alone. Yes, you may pay a touch more at a main dealer but many buyers decide the peace of mind is worth the premium.</p>
