Boom! What’s on this November

Trip the light fantastic around Hampshire and the Island this November with dazzling fireworks, blockbuster theatre and fabulous festive lights and markets.

VISIT: Christmas at Winchester City Mill, Mon 15 Nov – Mon 3 Jan, Winchester

Step inside the festively decorated Winchester City Mill for a back-in-time look at the traditions and beliefs of the ancient midwinter festival. Discover how King Alfred and his subjects would have celebrated, including workers here at the Mill. While you’re here, make time for hot choccies and a spot of cake in the cosy café.

Kicking-off Christmas in the city, community heroes will push the button for this year’s big light switch on. Look out for Santa’s Sleigh and listen to live performances from The Pilgrims’ School Chamber Choir, Theatre Royal Winchester, Spitfire Sisters, Rock Choir and more.

See the city in a new light as local and national artists take to the streets for three nights of art and light installations. Opening on Thurs 18 November, alongside the Commercial Road Christmas light switch on, stroll through the city as the streets and buildings of Portsmouth are transformed into a night-time gallery. Look out for installations from international artists Heinrich & Palmer at St. Mary’s Church and local artists Foursandeights and Pompey Banana Club in the town centre.

KIDS: Stickman adventure, Fri 19 Nov, Churcher’s College Junior School & Nursery, Liphook

Wellies alert! Under 5s are invited to Churcher’s College Junior School & Nursery on Friday 19 November 2021, 9.30 – 10.30am, for a Stickman Adventure (pre-booking a must). Kit them out for all-weather autumn fun in the great East Hampshire outdoors.

SHOPPING: I Love Wight Artisan Christmas Shop, Fri 19 – Tues 23 Nov, The Garlic Farm, Newchurch

Buy your stocking fillers offline this year and support local at this brilliant annual pop-up at The Garlic Farm. Held in the Allium Barn, a cosy granary building with log burning stove, old beams and floorboards, there’s plenty to pick from. All the jewellery, art, cushions, decorations, cards, wood crafts, woollies, pottery and candles on sale are made by Island artisans.

Hampshire’s biggest and most atmospheric, German-style Christmas Market is back at Winchester Cathedral. Yep, the one with the choir boys twirling around in ice skates… Sadly, there’s no rink this year but you can still sip mulled wine and have a good mooch around the alpine-style chalet stalls all around the inner close.

VISIT: Christmas at Uppark, South Harting, nr Petersfield, Sat 20 Nov – Mon 3 Jan. (House: Thurs to Sun, closed 25 & 26 Dec).

Stroll through the twinkly lights in the garden then head inside the gorgeous mansion for all the sparkle and grandeur of a traditional family Christmas at Uppark. After, tuck into seasonal meals in the café and search for cool, quirky and vintage ‘novel’ stocking fillers in the second-hand bookshop.

Head to Applegarth Farm close to the Surrey border for a traditional Christmas Market. Foodie treats, crafts, accessories and gifts galore from artisan popups. There’s a Santa’s Grotto for the little ones, bubbles and mulled wine for the big ones, plus roast chestnuts, bratwurst, Raclette, homemade mince pies and more. And if that doesn’t get you in the mood (Scrooge), the live festive music and carol singers surely will.

VISIT: Steam Illuminations at The Watercress Line, Alton and Arlesford, 26-28 November

Steam Illuminations at the Watercress Line is back! A world first, the neon moving light show stole the headlines last year. Tripping the light fantastic, a whopping 13,174 colour-mixing LED lights and LED wristbands create different colours and flashing patterns as the train travels up and down the 10-mile line. Unmissable – quite literally.

THEATRE: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, 23 – 27 November, The Mayflower

A real theatrical blockbuster at the Mayflower this November, join Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter as they adventure in a frozen land of talking beasts. Featuring uplifting narrative and strong puppets, the strong production will captivate kids and grownups alike.

CHRISTMAS: Wylds Christmas Tree Farm, Sat Nov 27 – Wed 22 Dec, Liss

The festivities don’t officially begin for East Hants families until the annual trip to Wylds, a small acreage, family-owned Christmas Trees Farm. Pick a tree, glug a Glühwein in the heated log cabin bar and take the kids on a woodland walk to post letters to Father Christmas at the Wylds Postbox (Insta-moment). Look out for Kenai, the gorgeous big timber bear. Aww.

KIDS: Science Dino-mite, Sat 27 Nov – Sun 16 Jan, Winchester Science Centre

It’s not just Andy getting a dinosaur adventure this month. From 27 November, budding paleontologists can hunt for buried bones and watch dino-mite live shows at the Winchester Science Centre. As it’s that time of year, team up with Santa to go back in time to Christmas in the prehistoric era. In the planetarium, look to the stars in Solar System Stories, The Sky Before Christmas and Polaris live shows.

OUTDOORS: Fabulous Fireworks: 6 brilliant displays, 3 – 6 Nov, around Hampshire

Bonfire night is back – and it’ll definitely be one to remember, remember in Hampshire! So, what’s on and where to go? First up, on Wed 3 November, Cosham Bonfire & Fireworks free display with funfair.

On Friday 5 November, Southampton’s Ageas Bowl will light up with a 20 minute firework display set to music. Strawberry Fields will be forever remembered as the 2 x British Fireworks championships winners bring you New Forest Fireworks. (Look out for fairground rides and a fire performer too).

On Saturday 6 November, the annual Winchester torch procession will march through the High Street. Then, it’s on to the headline Bonfire and fireworks display. There’s a funfair, DJ and fireworks display set to music at Hatch Warren’s Fireworks Spectacular, near Basingstoke. Over in East Hampshire, Petersfield Round Table’s Firework Display always impresses – and raises money for good causes.

VISIT: Race the Train, Sat 6 Nov, Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Havenstreet

Now here’s a challenge. Can you finish the 5km run between Wootton and Havenstreet faster than a heritage Isle of Wight steam train? Starting off together, supporters really get on board, cheering on their runners from the train as both racers puff along.

FOOD & DRINK: Afternoon Tease at The Grand Café, Sat 6 Nov, Southampton
