Superflashy Newsflash! Downton celebs, hot festivals and cruises
All aboard! Superflashy's got mega cruise ships news, Lord Grantham and Lady Cora at the movies, festival lineups, new eateries - and Holly Wallaby's baby!
HUGH AT THE MOVIES
Fancy seeing the new Downton Abbey movie at the Earl of Grantham’s new local? Spotted in Liphook, local star and all-round good egg Hugh Bonneville was at the new Living Room Cinema for a gala screening. He was joined by Elizabeth McGovern (aka Lady Cora) and Director Simon Curtis at the fundraising event in support of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine appeal. And the local actor couldn’t be more pleased about the new addition to the neighbourhood, commenting: “A cinema – in Liphook – I can hardly believe it. Roll up!”
ONBOARD THE MEGA CRUISE SHIPS
Ultra-luxe mega cruise ships are back and docking in Southampton for a season of sailings around the Med and beyond. So of course, Superflashy’s been scoping out the best of what’s onboard. First up, (and new in port this month), the Enchanted Princess (above) has a tempting infinity Wakeview pool and bar to soak up sea views and pose beside with a cocktail.
Also just sailed off on her maiden voyage to Portugal, Spain and other welcoming warm climes, Celebrity Cruises have pulled in celeb Gwyneth Paltrow as wellness guru on their Celebrity Beyond mega-liner. And Britain’s very own Kelly Hoppen designed the interiors. Think glittering-gold dining spaces, relaxing greenery in the rooftop garden and a vast martini bar. Fair to say it’s a talking point, but Muddy’s a bit less sure about the, err, giant white acrobat elephant by the pool.
Love it or loathe it, the sell-out Boomtown is back this August in Winchester. The lineup is strictly under-wraps until the festival itself, but organisers have confirmed there’ll be new ‘districts’ of the vibrant temporary city at the Matterley Bowl.
Acts that have been confirmed for a bumper summer of festivals in our locale include Kasabian, Pete Tong and Muse at the Isle of Wight Festival next month. In August, Stereophonics, James and Paulo Nutini play at Victorious in Portsmouth. And Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, Sophie Ellis Bexter and The Kaiser Chiefs are on at CarFest South. Phew!
Fancy something a little more sedate? Canadian crooner Michael Buble plays the New Forest’s Chewton Glen Hotel on Mon 18 July.
MORE NEW EATERIES (AND DRINKERIES!)
Hot on the heels of the new Koh Thai and BIRD eateries Superflashy just reported opening in Portsmouth’s Port Solent, the marina-side leisure complex has cut the ribbon on another new restaurant. Doing pretty much what it says on the tin, the calorie-laden urban diner fare at Bangerz n Burgerz will be right up your (permanently hungry) teenager’s street.
In contrast, the New Forest’s Limewood Hotel has just given their Raw & Cured spa restaurant a super healthy makeover. Working to an ethos of “guilt-free enjoyment”, breakfast and lunch menus, created by top chef Luke Holder and restaurant manager and nutrition expert Ria Rhodes, feature fresh seasonal produce and gut-friendly home-fermented sauerkraut. And you don’t need a hotel or spa reservation to nip in and eat her, either. We’ll raise a superberry smoothie to that!
More newy-newness? Oh, go on then. Word has just reached Superflashy of a new cafe-bar opening soon on the Island. Part of the UK-wide, independent Lounges chain, the Correo Lounge will take-up the vacated Prezzo site on Newport’s High Street. It follows the launch of their popular Arboro Lounge, opened in October at Ringwood’s The Furlong Shopping Centre.
EVERYBODY LOVES JOEY(S)
Marwell Zoo‘s new Brickasaurs display has been going down a treat with visitors since it opened in April. But stealing the headlines at the Hampshire zoo are the two brand-new baby red-necked wallaby joeys who’ve just peeked their heads out of their mums’ pouches. And Muddy’s loving the fact that the Wallaby mums are named after This Morning hosts Alison Hammond and Holly (Wallaby). Cuteness overload.
