We all know seasonal and local menus are better for the environment and taste better. Hampshire and the Isle of Wight certainly have our fair share of fantastic producers and farmshops. But where do you go to eat out and support local? Phones at the ready – here’s our pick of the best local farm to table restaurants and sustainable pop ups to book this autumn…

Hollycombe Home Farm, Liphook

Farm-reared meat cooked in situ? It doesn’t get much fresher than this farm to table dining experience. It’s a new pop-up at Hollycombe Home Farm, a working family farm in the South Downs village of Liphook. Tuck into grass-fed meat cooked on open-fires, craft beers, natural wine and more at their events on 20 November and 11 December.

THE PIG New Forest, Brockenhurst

Autumn is a brilliant time to visit this little Piggie. What can’t be grown in the Kitchen Garden is sourced from within a 25-mile radius. Expect brilliant, New Forest produce and local farm to table bounty. Think pannage pork with ‘dazzling blue’ cavolo nero and wild pear and mustard sauce, served up in the light, conservatory restaurant. Fabulous.

Applegarth Farm, Grayshott

A culinary gem in the East Hampshire village of Grayshott, Applegarth Farm’s Kitchen Garden menu features homegrown, local, sustainable and quality ingredients. Look out for a bountiful autumn dishes like wild mushrooms on sourdough toast; rabbit & partridge rillette and venison haunch with celeriac, beetroot and rowan berry jelly. Something for the weekend? There’s wood-fired pizzas to eat in or takeaway on Fridays and Saturdays.

Heckfield Place, Hook

A luxe, North Hampshire country hotel, Heckfield Place has its own biodynamic farm. Culinary director Skye Gyngell has a ready supply of vegetables, fruit, flowers, herbs and honey. Expect fresh, pared-back dishes at the hotel’s two on-site restaurants, Marle and Hearth. Fancy a tour? Super-fresh island meat and dairy is served-up in a converted barn at Bluebells. It once housed the beautiful Guernsey herd the café is named after. The fresh, seasonal menu is sourced literally farm to table and served-up with ingredients from Island farmers and growers. Briddlesford rose veal and dairy products feature in signature dishes like house schnitzel, homemade pies, halloumi burgers and Briddlesford mess dessert. Yum.
