Can Giuseppe Manco Salon transform the Muddy mane?

Desperately seeking tamer tresses, commercial manager Robyn heads to the popular new Winchester hairdressers – and has a distinctly steamy encounter

OK, hands up who schedules their hair appointments after an indeterminate amount of time – and when you wake up one morning, look in the mirror and think “uh, oh, I need a cut?” If you’re more organised than me and have your appointment diary already scheduled for 2022, I doff my cap to you. But it’s fair to say I’m very much in that ‘necessity cut’ camp.

So, when I heard about Winchester’s Giuseppe Manco Salon with its strong local following, no rush policy and Italian coffee on tap, when that moment of overdue cut realisation came, I booked my appointment – pronto.

THE SALON

Giuseppe Manco salon exterior

Giuseppe and Veronika Manco opened the salon in June 2021. Tucked away in Staple Gardens, it’s close to the High Street and Jewry Street towards the top of town.

Inside, the vibe is peaceful and relaxed, with great Italian jazz music playing and hot coffee, served up with a biscotti snack to nibble on.

The team here are really friendly but there’s no endless small talk, which, happily for me, means I can sneak in a few emails and flick through a magazine.

THE STYLISTS

Giuseppe Manco has a big following locally. He also has an impressive CV, having won awards, trained at the HABIA Academy, Vidal Sassoon Academy London, Mazzella and Palmer Academy London and worked as a stylist at international Fashion Weeks in Paris and Milan – and I’m told he’s off to London Fashion Week 2022, too.

When I visit, his calendar is booked solid (the regular in his chair makes a point of telling me how fantastic he is). So I’m put in the very capable hands of his Senior Stylist, who’s also Italian, trained by Giuseppe and clearly very talented in her own right.

MY HAIR ISSUE

Some people lack volume in their hair but I have too much of it. It’s also quite dry as I don’t spend a lot of time on it (quicker to hide it under a bobble hat – or a riding hat!). And, as we know, I was definitely overdue a good cut…

THE CUT

Before the scissors come out, my stylist recommends a Deluxe Hair and Scalp Spa Ritual. The salon is big on the health and wellbeing of hair. In my case, she uses a combination of conditioning Philip Martin’s bio-organic, non-toxic chemical products (an Italian brand) with a ‘vaporetto’ (steam machine).

The process lifts the hair follicles to allow better penetration of ingredients into the hair and scalp. True to the ‘no rush’ ethos of the salon, my stylist gives me an amazing head massage with the wash and takes her time over the cut and blow dry.

THE BEFORE AND AFTER

It’s all very well reading reviews, but we all know the proof is in the pictures, right? So here you go. Here’s me before:

And here’s me afterwards:

Giuseppe Manco Salon, I think we can call that a transformation.

THE COST

Good value for the quality. Cuts start from £65 and treatments from £25. The Deluxe Hair and Scalp Spa Ritual I had with the cut and blowdry was £145.
