Who’s in need of an endorphin hit? Christmas couch to 5k (ahem, yes) or raring for the next competitive fitness fixture, there’s plenty of options for all abilities in these 2022 runs and triathlons in and around Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Time to commit to fit. Let’s do this, people!
The ABP Southampton Marathon, Southampton
When: 24 April 2022
££: £7 – £54.99
What to expect: Starting and finishing at the Guildhall Square, the two-lap Southampton Marathon racecourse weaves its way in and around the city taking in the Itchen Bridge, St Mary’s ‘Saints’ Football Stadium, the riverside and Southampton Common. If you don’t fancy the full marathon, there’s a half marathon, 10km challenge and 1km fun run.
Winchester May Day Triathlon, Winchester, Hampshire
When: 2 May 2022
What to expect: Spring into the 2022 triathlon scene with this Winchester event at King’s School: a 400m swim, 22km bike and 5km cross-country run over hilly terrain in the ancient capital. For newbies there’s a Novice ‘Try Tri’ Triathlon with less gruelling 200m swim; 11km Bike and 2.5km Run, and a children’s triathlon for kids aged 8 – 15.
Isle of Wight Festival of Running, various locations around West Wight
When: 29 May – 5 June 2022

What to expect: Five circular cross-country routes with gorgeous coastal views to distract when you start to feel the burn. For the most serious, the Headline event is the Needles Half Marathon, but there’s also the Tapnell 10k, newbie-friendly 5k Duver Dash and a 1km route for kids.
The Serpent Trail Race, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire
When: 22 July 2022
££: £26 – £96
What to expect: Go big, bigger or biggest on the Serpent Trail, from 10k up to 100k, the entire length of this stunning long distance route in the South Downs National Park. Running from Haslemere in West Sussex through Surrey and over the border to Petersfield, Hampshire, there’s miles of woodland, ridges and heathland to enjoy along the way. If the whopping 50k or 100k events sound too epic, sign-up for the 10k tail-end of the Serpent for less of a sting.
Andover Trail Marathon, Andover, Hampshire
When: 3 September 2022
What to expect: One for seasoned runners, this North Hampshire run is a challenging 26.2 miles, taking in steep climbs up to 280m for panoramic views and equally-scenic descents through meadows and valleys.
Bournemouth Half Marathon, Dorset
When: 8 – 9 October 2022
££: £13.50 – £39.75
What to expect: Just over the border in Dorset, breathe (or gulp) in plenty of sea air on the Bournemouth Half. It heads out from Hengistbury Head and winds along clifftops, seafront and promenades, ending up at Bournemouth Pier. A bonus, finishers get official bragging-rights merchandise including a t-shirt and shiny medal. There’s a Junior 2K for 9 – 12 year-olds. Littlies aged 3-6 can also run in this one: the Kids’ Kilometre takes in the iconic Bournemouth Pier.
The Great South Run, Southsea, Hampshire
When: 15 – 16 October 2022

What to expect: Ahoy! Pound the road on this famous city 5k or 10-miler along the Southsea seafront and into the dockyard, with a medal and t-shirt for crossing the finish line. Check out the site for great training and event day tips and Great Run Solo virtual training events.
