EVENT: Winchester Heritage Open Days, Fri 13 – Sun 22 Sep
The calendar for this week is packed with openings and events across Winchester for its annual Heritage Open Days festival. Take a sneaky peek at fab events such as the Hampshire Food & Drink exhibition at the Winchester Discovery Centre and discover an exhibition of some amazing Hampshire women at the Hampshire Records office. Lots of events are free of charge as well.
MUSIC: Solent Music Festival, St Thomas Church, Lymington, Mon 16 – Sun 22 Sept
Recitals, concerts and extraordinary performances are par for the course this week at the Solent Music Festival in Lymington. As well as a fantastic concert dedicated to brilliant female composers (Tues 17th) you can also check out the talented Navarra String Quartet (Wed 18th) and the full Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (Sat 21st). Opera glasses at the ready!
THEATRE: Stephen Daldry’s An Inspector Calls, The Mayflower, Southampton, Tues 17 -Sat 21 Sep
Over at The Mayflower in Southampton this week make sure to check out record-breaking and multi-award-winning production of Stephen Daldry’s An Inspector Calls. This absolutely smashed it out of the park at the box office with a sold out run in London and an American tour. Best grab your tickets before it sells out again!

Discover how they make gin in Hiltingbury near Eastleigh at this special one-off event in Basingstoke. Its London Dry gin has some cracking botanicals including rose petals, grapefruit zest, allspice berries and cardamom pods. Oooh fancy!
CULTURE: New Forest Fiction, Lyndhurst Community Centre, Fri 20 Sep
Bookworms and New Forest aficionados rejoice! This special evening of discussion talks about some of the authors who have used the area as a backdrop in their tales, both in the past and the present. Featuring authors such as Edward Rutherfurd, Sally Marsh and Clara McKenna, local actors will read the words of those from the past and will also offer a Q&A about what makes the area so inspirational.
CULTURE: Fresh: Art Fair, Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire, Fri 20 – Sun 22 Sep
This is MAJOR. Alongside mega-hits by Tracey Emin, Hockney, Banksy and Damien Hirst, this Chris Levine portrait of Her Maj will be on display just over the Berkshire border at Fresh:Art Fair at Ascot Racecourse. Some of the best galleries (Muddy Award-winning ones among them) in the UK and Ireland, will bring more than 6,000 pieces, priced from £500 to £5,000 (19 – 22 Sept). Not that we’re biased, but it’s no surprise that there’s an Isle of Wight Day (Sat 21). Celebrating all that’s great about the Wight (and goodness there’s A LOT), expect live music, a beach clean initiative and more to be announced.
CULTURE: Lichfield, Duffy and Donovan: Snapping the Sixities, Mottisfont House, Sat 21
Swing, 60s-stylee, over to Mottisfont House for a fab new exhibition kicking off on Sat 21st. Lichfield, Duffy and Donovan: Snapping the Sixties exhibition will give you a sneaky-peek into one of the most iconic decades of the 20th-century with its famous faces, fashion and fun, all captured on film. Groovy baby!
EVENT: 120th Annual Isle of Wight Ploughing Match, Manor Farm, Wellow, Sat 21 Sep
We DO love a bit of quirky here at Muddy and I would be hardpressed to find anything more quirky than this event on the Island this week. For 120 years Islanders have been battling it out in the fields for the annual Isle of Wight Ploughing Match. Yep, countryside pursuits at their finest. Go and cheer on the competitors and also stock up on all the lovely local food and drink that will be on sale as well.
FOOD & DRINK: Bembridge Harbour Food Festival, Sat 21 – Sun 22 Sep
Also on the Island this weekend is the Bembridge Harbour Food Festival. Fantastic freshly caught local food, fab dairy bits from Muddy fave Briddlesford Farm, booze from the Isle of Wight Distillery and Tipsy Wight. Take plenty of cash and a big appetite to this one.
EVENT: Raw Events: Secret Garden Party, Yateley, Sat 21 Sep
We like to keep our eyes open for off-the-radar events and my little birds have told me about Raw Events/ Secret Garden Party/ Mini Fest in a super-secret location around Yateley on Sat 21. Here you can dance the day and night away with DJs playing feel-good songs (#ALLTHECHEESE), and epic BBQ food once you’ve built up your appetite on the dance floor. Oh, and its kid-friendly so no babysitter required for this one.
FOOD & DRINK: Cider and Cheese Weekend, Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Sat 21 – Sun 22 Sep
And if you’re Island-bound at all make sure to grab your train ticket to hop aboard the Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s Cider & Cheese Weekend on Sat 21 – Sun 22. My top cheesy tips? Get some Gallybagger and Isle of Wight Blue for a real taste of the Wight.
EVENT: Southampton Boat Show, Mayflower Park, Fri 13 – Sun 22 Sep
Fancy yourself sipping champers aloft a beautiful yacht in the Med. While the dream may be slightly unattainable (I’ll keep checking my Lotto tickets in the meantime), you can certainly dip your toes into the water with the annual extravaganza that is the Southampton Boat Show. Featuring impossible dreams and some more realistic ones, there’s also plenty of entertainment and quirky extras to check out on a visit.
EVENT: West Green House Classic Car Show, Hook, Sun 22 Sep
If you’ve got a gaggle of petrol heads then I totally recommend the West Green House Classic Car Show in Hook (Sun 22). Consider it a mini-Goodwood of classic car enthusiasts and those who just like to look at the pretty old cars. Vroom vroom!
CULTURE: Artist takeover: Mary Wollstonecraft, Chawton House, until Fri 29 Nov
It’s been 230 year since the French Revolution and this fantastic exhibition chronicles the musings and accounts written by Mary Wollenstonecraft, a writer and philosopher who resided in Paris during The Reign of Terror. Her accounts have been taken and transformed into striking imagery by artists Louisa Albani to give visitors a real experience for all senses.
