Come a little bit closer and I'll give you ALL the goss on what's happening in Hants & IoW. Go on! I know you want to.
Bye Bye Tiger Tiger, Hello Eden!
It’s an end of an era in Portsmouth with the infamous Tiger Tiger having closed its doors last month. And while there may no longer be the Tiki Lounge to dance away in, next week (Fri 5 Jul) sees the open of a brand spanking new venue – Eden.
The premise has been taken over by The Deltic Group, and is launching its version of ‘paradise’ in the Gunwharf Quays location. Think floral walls for selfies, a bespoke pizza oven and maximising on the rather fabulous rooftop terrace overlooking the Solent.
The club is being launched with two special events featuring Capital FM and JLS alum Marvin Humes on Fri 5 and Hampshire’s very own superstar Radio 1 DJ, Scott Mills on Sat 6 Jul. We’ll report back!
Sun, sea and Southampton
Well, who would have thought it? Southampton has recently twinned with Florida’s favourite party spot, Miami. And while I can’t imagine Will Smith will be rapping about Oxford Street any time soon, it’s a huge boost for the city and will certainly increase Southampton’s foot-hold as a must-visit destination.
Beach Club Cancelled
Not quite an opening, not quite a closure. There was a lot of hubbub going on in Sandown recently about the launch of a brand new Ibiza-style Beach Club called Origin. Think swimming pool, outdoor terraces, cocktail bar, DJ-booth, all from the team behind Nikki Beach and Ocean Club Marbella. Sadly, it looks like things have not come to fruition and the project seems to have been completely cancelled. However, if you fancy getting a taste of what it may have been like then the sister-site Auckland House Hotel recently opened its doors down the road in Shanklin.
In the Sunday Times this weekend Lymington in the New Forest was picked as one of the ten top spots for part-time commuters. It’s location by the sea, good rail transport links, plus brilliant schools and facilities nearby makes it a fab spot to live and work without the hustle and bustle of city life. We can certainly agree with that (we’re not biased… honest!)
The Black Rat in Winchester has done it again! Not content with being the only Michelin Star restaurant in Hampshire, they’ve been named the 10th Best Restaurant in the UK on OpenTable.com’s annual Top 50 Fit for Foodies list. Nicely done.
Also on the foodie front, recently refurbed The Grosvenor in Stockbridge is playing host to a fab supper club on Thurs 4 Jul as Gregg Wallace of Masterchef fame heads for an evening of talk and fab food. Since it was taken over, The Grosvenor has really started making waves as a place to go in Hants and I’m sure this is just first in a long line of exciting events to come out of here.
Over on the Island, there’s going to be a new foodie spot to check out from next year. The Terrace, located above the Wightlink office in Yarmouth – formerly Yarmouth Spice – has been taken over by the family who own and run The Royal Hotel in Ventnor. The plans are big too with fabulous views across the Solent and installation of a brand new floating Tetradock, diners will be able to sail in, moor up and grab breakfast, lunch and dinner in the New England themed eatery. Due to open in March 2020, we’ll let you know more details as we get them.
