Have you heard the latest local gossip?
Netflix in town, more Hoxton Bakehouses, Hugh Bonneville, a luxe new hotel and more - local gossip in Hampshire.
Hot new Netflix series filming in Winchester
Local news hounds have been in overdrive this month. Spotted outside Winchester College, a Netflix crew filming its hotly-anticipated new drama, Anatomy of A Scandal. Adapted from the hit novel by Sarah Vaughan, the story involves a Westminster scandal that rocks the British elite. It will star Sienna Miller, Rupert Friend and Michelle Dockery, with recent sightings of Sienna filming in London, too.
Locals know Winchester is a magnet for film crews. It’s not the first time Netflix has been in town, bringing celebs wafting around the Cathedral. The Crown has been filmed on location here on several occasions. Founded in 1382, the Winchester College campus is also a local filming favourite. It’s hosted several movie crews too, including Les Misérables with Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway.
Hoxton Bakehouses on a roll
Stockbridge locals rejoice – a Hoxton Bakehouse café is coming to town! Having opened new cafés in Bishops Waltham and Petersfield last year, the bakery chain will also open a branch over the border in Farnham. To help them ‘rise’ to the challenge, Hoxton is planning a new bakery and coffee roastery, too. Newbies beware – the signature buns are seriously addictive.
Watergate Bay team develop destination hotel in Hampshire
Beyond exciting – a major new destination hotel in Hampshire from the team behind the uber-swanky Watergate Bay in Cornwall. It follows the launch of Another Place, The Lake on the stunning Lake Ullswater in the Lake District.
Another Place snapped up the sprawling Amport House in the countryside village of Amport, near Andover, in 2020. It will open as Another Place, The Garden, in early 2022. Plans for the ultra-luxe, 50-bedroom development include restaurants, a yoga studio, riding and an intriguing-sounding back-to-nature-style reed pool. Pencil us in for the opening weekend.
Reasons to be cheerful No. 1: Good for Hugh
Celebrity spots have been a bit thin on the ground recently. In Petersfield, locals are used to seeing Josh Hartnett (last confirmed sighting at the Heath in November). Nearby, there’s also the lovely Hugh Bonneville and Noel Gallagher – usually sighted at the train station.
Hugh is even more likely to pop up when a good cause is involved. Like at this pre-pandemic, teddy bear skydive jump off St. Peter’s Church roof for Save the Children (above). So we were heartened to see him on TV cheerfully volunteering his local vaccination centre, just over the border in Midhurst. Chances of us being directed to our jab by Josh or Noel? Erm…
Northbrook Arms plots luxury cottage escapes
Another Place aren’t the only team working on a grand design this year. Also North of Winchester, the Northbrook Arms in East Stratton has commissioned a major renovation. It’s in the process of giving the pub a fresh new look and building some seriously stylish holiday cottages. The next phase, due for completion in 2022, will include a gym, swimming pool and treatment rooms. Deluxe.
A pizza the action for Lymington
Down on the coast and brand spanking new in Lymington, a gourmet pizza restaurant is opening this week on Gosport Street. Catching our eye on the ‘Eat Pizza’ menu are posh mushroom, vegan and pepperoni toppings for takeaway. There’s also fries, pizza fries (yes, apparently that’s a thing!), olives, calamari and craft beers. Yum.
Reasons to be cheerful No. 2: Adorable baby lambs (aaahhh)
The big freeze is over! Spring is in the air, baby lambs are popping out everywhere and we’re loving it. Gamboling happily at Chewton Glen in the New Forest: Harry, Henry, Hannah and Bella.
Elsewhere, Sylvester the ram at Staunton Farm in Havant has become a dad to eight gorgeous new arrivals, including this little one (above). And on the Island, a sweet mum and baby were spotted near Carisbrooke Castle. There’s plenty of new arrivals too at Finkley Down Farm near Andover. The nursery pen is already full of tiny lambs. Keep watching for some brand new baby kids expected imminently to keep cute baby goat Isaac company. Aww.
