<p>Young or old, the idea of a secret world tucked away at the back of your closet is irresistible (especially if the sad reality is a bit of dust and the odd partnerless sock). Head for Mottisfont this winter and step into an imagination-sparking Narnia-inspired world, with scenes and a family trail inspired by C. S. Lewis’ <em>The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.</em></p>



<p>Inside, rooms will be transformed for a 1940s Christmas. Follow wartime evacuees Edmund, Lucy, Susan and Peter on their adventures through the famous wardrobe and into the kingdom of the White Witch – a landscape of snow and Turkish Delight. In the upstairs gallery you’ll find beautiful original Narnia illustrations.</p>



<p>Outside, a Narnia-style map continues the adventure with story-themed activities for families and Insta-worthy photo ops beside Beaver’s cottage, Father Christmas’ sleigh and the throne room at Cair Paravel. </p>

<p>The South Downs mansion with sweeping countryside views, Uppark always creates a beautiful festive setting. This year, grand entertaining rooms and below stairs, in the fascinating former servants quarters. </p>



<p>The original 1920s party house, Uppark will deck the halls in style, starting with wonderful festive scents from fragrant winter greenery, pinecones, citrus fruit and cinnamon greeting visitors as you step through the entrance. Above and below stairs, each room will have its own crafted theme, from music to haberdashery, made by local community groups. </p>

<p>An essential overseas jaunt for well-to-do Georgians, before inheriting The Vyne John Chute went on a Grand Tour of the continent, exploring France, Italy, Austria, Germany and Belgium.</p>



<p>This year, the festive fun and decor at the grand National Trust mansion is inspired by the places he visited. Look out for sumptuous Venetian masks, mini ‘Colosseums’ and intricate Moravian star decorations, as well as some of the souvenirs Chute picked up on his travels, such a casket encrusted with semi-precious stones. And of course, rooms will be well and truly be decked out in traditional Christmas finery.</p>



<p>Pick up a special ‘Passport’ trail and take your own Grand Tour adventure in the house and gardens, with activities to try that explore festive traditions in other countries. </p>

<p>Beep, beep! Oh dear, Toad&#8217;s in trouble again. Follow Mole, Rat and Badger through Hinton Ampner this Christmas as they leave their sheltered lives in the woods to rescue Toad from his wild adventures. Rooms will be specially decked out to tell the story, from Toad’s motor car exploits to the friends’ stand against the mischievous weasels. </p>



<p>Outside, you can visit the characters’ homes too, including Mole’s sweet little burrow among the trees and the grandeur of Toad Hall in the walled garden. Time it right and find <em>Wind in the Willows </em>storytelling in Hinton’s second-hand bookshop on select days. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s back to Tudor times at the beautiful Winchester City Mill this Christmas, celebrating the time Queen Mary I gifted the Mill to the City of Winchester. The ancient building is all set for a royal feast, with festive decorations, costumes to dress up in and a throne to sit on for a right royal Tudor selfie.&nbsp; </p>



<p>In the cafe, tuck into festive specials like marchpane and gold leaf shortbread and other seasonal treats made using the Mill’s own stoneground flour. At weekends, watch volunteer millers make fresh stoneground flour and buy some to whip up your own festive treats at home. </p>
