My Favourite Places with Josie Eastwood
We caught up with the twice Muddy Award winner, whose new gallery space opens this November right in the heart of the Test Valley.
THE PEAT SPADE PUB, LONGSTOCK
This is a picture postcard pretty village pub, serving great food, with fantastic staff. It sits near the banks of the River Test, and has a sweet courtyard garden with a recently added pizza oven. They have a great menu, with delicious daily specials. On Tuesdays the pub hosts steak frites nights that are also good value — probably best to book first. It is only 200 yards from the gallery, and we tend to go there too often!
LECKFORD GARDEN NURSERY AND FARM SHOP, LONGSTOCK
The plant nursery at Leckford is excellent, with a wide range of specialist plants and very helpful and knowledgeable staff. We are just starting to landscape the gardens at our new home, and it has been a fantastic place to source healthy plants and to get great advice. In the past year a farm shop and cafe have been added, good places for a lunch or tea and to pick-up produce grown on the Leckford Estate.
BEECHCROFT FARM SHOP & BUTCHER, SARUM ROAD, WINCHESTER
This farm shop has the best views, based just outside Winchester in rolling country, where they rear their own rare breed cattle, sheep and pigs. It is seriously the best meat I have ever found, and they have a very loyal following. Rachel who runs it, gives great advice on new recipes too. They have recently added a coffee shop and serve delicious cakes! The shop is only open on Fridays and Saturdays. SO22 5QS
GEORGE CLARKE, STOCKBRIDGE
On Stockbridge High Street, this interiors shop is a treasure trove for things for your home. Camilla, who runs it, has a great eye, and on sale is pretty tableware, candles, throws; you will get endless ideas for presents. At the back of the shop they have an array of beautiful lamps, and offer a bespoke lampshade making service. The other day I took in an unusual lamp I had inherited and they transformed it by helping me choose the right shade.
THE NEW ART CENTRE, ROCHE COURT, nr. SALISBURY
A sculpture park near Salisbury with work by many internationally famous artists exhibited in parkland in the grounds of 19C Roche Court. The New Art Centre has a changing programme of exhibitions with artists from 1950 to the present day. Amongst those on show are works by Christopher Le Brun PRA, Michael Craig Martin and Conrad Shawcross. Entry is free. East Winterslow, Salisbury, SP5 1PG.
HAUSER AND WIRTH – BRUTON
This famous international gallery has an outpost based just outside Bruton in Somerset. With a rolling calendar of contemporary exhibitions, it is definitely worth a visit. Piet Oudolf has designed the amazing garden, which is best seen in the spring. There is also an excellent restaurant, The Roth Bar and Grill, where you can eat surrounded by many well known works of art. Booking is essential and entry to the gallery free. Bruton BA10 ONL
The inaugural exhibition of Josie Eastwood’s new gallery launches on Saturday November 10th and remains open until Saturday November 24th.
The gallery will stage five exhibitions a year with a mixed programme of contemporary painting, ceramics and sculpture, celebrating and supporting both established and emerging artists.
For present ideas, keep an eye out for the annual Christmas exhibition as well. In between exhibitions, the gallery will be open by appointment most Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Please check the website for opening times and further information: www.josieeastwood.com
