My Favourite Places with Michael Turner
An aficionado of stainless steel, Hampshire artist Michael Turner shares with Muddy his absolute top spots around the county.
We absolutely love Hampshire artist Michael Turner‘s nature-inspired creations. Working with stainless steel and often upcycling old elements into something brand new, they really capture something special in their construction. It’s no surprise that Gordon Ramsey is a big fan of his work and it has appeared in top international exhibitions.
Having lived and worked in the New Forest for most of his life, Muddy asked Michael where are his absolute top spots to go…
The Haven, Lymington
I have two favourite places to eat and drink (narrowed down of course!) The Haven Bar Bistro, Lymington is an old favourite of mine. It’s such a fantastic setting for sundowners on a Friday night and the food is really great. If I’m going to have a meeting with a gallery or a client, this is my go to place.
I also love The Chequers in Lymington, it’s a great dog walking pub that we frequent regularly, especially when the rugby is on!
My family and I love paddleboarding over to Hurst Castle. In the summer months, we get the kids settled on their own paddleboards, while Jenny (his wife) and I paddle out to the beaches near Hurst Castle Spit. It’s a great place for a picnic and a quick dip.
The New Forest
My morning dog walks on the sea wall and in the forest give me a chance each day to focus and think about what lies ahead. A lot of my work is inspired by nature and with the plethora of wildlife in the area, I’m always finding new ideas for my work. We’re lucky enough to have the wild ponies, stags and other animals such as pigs and Highland cows around the area – though it’s taken a few years for us to get our dog, Poppy, to not chase them!
Also, each year I create a number of poppies for a special Remembrance Sunday hunt in the area. The forest provides some amazing hiding spots and makes the whole event really special for both me and everybody else involved.
We holiday in France most years and particularly love the Languedoc region. It’s absolutely fantastic. You get to visit the most amazing inland rivers. Actually, France is just amazing for wine and food in general.
The Kings Head, Lymington
The Kings Head on the cobbles is a really special place for me, as this is where I met my wife. Going here brings back great memories and The Kings Head is itself steeped in history as one of the oldest pubs in the New Forest.
Coastal Gallery, Lymington
The Coastal Gallery in Lymington is a lovely boutique gallery, with the most amazing gallery owners, Stewart Meecham & Bev Saunders. Some of my work is in the gallery along with a huge range of other artists and creators. If you pop by you may be able to spot my giant Nautilus sculpture in the window!
