Wine Utopia, Winchester and Stockbridge
A tutored pick of an Aladdin’s cave of vino or a corking case delivered in time for the weekend? Yes please! Whatever your top tipple, from a seriously-cool Stellenbosch Cinsault to small-batch Test Valley Gin, this Muddy-approved indie wine merchant’s got you covered.
Let’s face it, unless you’ve got a degree in wine or grew up on a vineyard (we wish), navigating the shelves of a well-stocked wine shop can be a bit daunting to say the least. Refreshingly, the philosophy at wine merchants Wine Utopia is ‘if we wouldn’t drink it at home, we won’t stock it’, which minimises the risk factor considerably – these guys really know their stuff.
The independent firm has three sites: a street-side shop with picture-perfect exterior in St. Thomas Street, Winchester, and another (similarly gorgeously fronted) shop in Stockbridge High Street. Wine Utopia’s third store is in Kingsworthy, close to Winchester, a flagship warehouse with convenient parking for bulkier buys.
A good range of budget buys sit alongside pricier, special-occasion choices with friendly, expert advice to help both knowledgeable oenophiles and the slightly less clued-up among us find a top drop to suit. There are also plenty of spirits to choose from too, including a curated selection of the bewildering array of local gins like the Winchester Distillery’s Twisted Nose and the fragrant, herb-infused Test Valley Gin.
On the expert team are Operations Manager Andy Chamberlain, who’s worked in the Winchester-area wine trade for over fourteen years and has a penchant for rich champagne (don’t we all!), and ex-Majestic Wine Regional Sales Head Richard Milward, now Commercial and Sales Director at Wine Utopia, who particularly loves Northern Italian Reds. Also working across all three shops, Chris Thornton is Wine Utopia’s French Wine Aficionado (what a title!), regularly migrating to the south of the country in Summer for research purposes…
Tastings-supremo and Shop Manager Yolly Cresswell manages the flagship Stockbridge store and loves a cheeky glass of New Zealand Pinot noir, ably supported by Kat Brown and Emma Windsor, while in Winchester, Cover Manager Hannah Broomfield has a special love for Italian wine, even getting married on a Tuscan vineyard (how dreamy) – if she’s on duty be sure to ask about Aussie vineyards as she’s toured most of them. Special mention too goes to Logistics Manager Paul Wigg, whose job it is to get the home deliveries done on time – cheers to that!
