A proper relaxed dining gem, four miles south of Winchester at Otterbourne, The White Horse is an AA rosette-rated pub, with an always-informal weekend vibe. Open for brekkie, lunch and dinner, it serves up top British dishes made using some of the best locally-sourced meat, fish, dairy and veg from suppliers around the South coast.

Inside the pub-restaurant, traditional wooden tables and interiors blend stylishly with contemporary touches. There are some great pub favourites on the menu, like Hampshire beef burger, braised short rib pie and fish and chips. And plenty of modern British and internationally-inspired fare too, like trout pappardelle and cheese soufflé (made with New Forest Stoney Cross cheese), served up with watercress salad. On Sundays, a choice of roasts come with all the seasonal trimmings, roast potatoes and giant Yorkshire puddings.

Whatever your tipple, there’s plenty to please on the White Horse’s drinks menu too, including great local real ales and speciality spirits. Oenophiles will be in raptures about the choice of top drops tucked away in the White Horse’s hidden cellar, which is packed with a big selection of the best bin end and some especially good varieties of New World wines.

Outdoors at the White Horse, there’s a large suntrap garden and dining terrace with a newly upgraded children’s play area and a pizza oven for fun summer dining. On the fun, Alice in Wonderland-themed children’s menu are plenty of crowd pleasers like waffles for brekkie, macaroni cheese, burgers and a mini Sunday roast. As a bonus, 50p per kid’s meal is donated to the fantastic Murray Parish Trust, which supports children’s emergency services across the South of England.
