The Mutton at Hazeley Heath, Hook
A dream country local with stunning views in North Hampshire serving top-notch food and drinks.

The Mutton at Hazeley Heath is a former 19th century post office turned North Hampshire pub on the fringe of Hazeley Heath Nature reserve.
Full of country character, it was reimagined as a glorious gastro by the Taylor Family, in 2022. The dog and family-friendly pub has gone on to win a string of awards, including a coveted two AA-Rosettes.
Previously crowned ‘Pub of the Year’ in the National Pub & Bar Awards, the Mutton was also twice voted Best Destination Pub in the Hampshire Muddy Awards.
In summer, the pergola in the gorgeous pub garden here is wrapped in a lilac cloud of wisteria – perfect for Golden Hour drinks and a suitably lovely spot for a summery lunch or supper. Fire has a way of making great ingredients even better and the OFYR grill menu leans into that with delicious summer plates designed for sharing – think chorizo sausage with butterbean salad, smoky lamb kofta with whipped ricotta and whole grilled plaice with sauce vierge.
Drinks flow from the timber bar as guests settle back on comfortable sofas enjoying views over Hazeley Farm and beyond. For a spot of private dining with a difference, the Mutton also has beautifully furnished Shepherd’s Huts.
Inside The Mutton, guests can take in the gorgeous countryside vistas from the garden room, dine in the 75- seater dining area and relax by the open fire in winter.
A champion of local businesses, The Mutton draws inspiration from locally-sourced and seasonal British produce for its menu. The kitchen here is headed up by Rob Boer, who began his career in Cornwall under Nathan Outlaw. He went on to work at The Black Rat in Winchester and was Head Chef at Matthew Tomkinson’s Betony restaurant in Wiltshire.
Open every morning from 8.30am, kick off the day with delicious coffee and warming cups of tea; fabulous pastries from The Street Bakeshop in Old Basing; freshly made sausage rolls; creamy yoghurt topped with homemade granola and fruit compote; and apple crumble muffins. The Mutton’s ever-changing menus include great-value two-and-three course set menus. There’s also Little Lambs kids’ options and delicious Sunday roasts. Special themed dinners include collaborations with the likes of Hattingley Valley and curated Taste Of menu events with British and international themes.
The large selection of cask ales, craft beers and cider come with tutored recommendations. And there’s lots to choose from on the international wines list too, including organic and biodynamic wines. Cocktail hour is also well catered for at the friendly pub, with signatures including the Mutton Mary, Pisco Sour and Espresso Martini. Cheers!
