The Cholderton Estate, Cholderton
Giddy up to this family-owned countryside estate and wedding venue on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border for dog-friendly self-catering cottage and glamping stays.
A beautiful, back-to-nature self-catering cottage, glamping site and wedding venue with secluded rural charm with added creature comforts, the Cholderton Estate in Hampshire makes a pretty perfect countryside hideaway for staycations and gorgeous weekend getaways.
Owned by the same family since the 1880s, Cholderton Estate is a fully-organic 2,500-acre working estate grazed by cattle, sheep and horses. A short drive from the UNESCO World Heritage site of Stonehenge, the ancient site has had its own fair share of historic discoveries. From prehistoric ceremonial round barrows and earth works to bronze age treasure hoards found in the fields.
With its farm animals, gardens, grounds and close proximity to Stonehenge, the estate is pretty perfect for couples and young families looking for a self-catering stopover on the way to Cornwall and the West Country. And it’s also a pretty magical off-grid, countryside escape in its own right.
Delightfully located far from the madding crowds and all dog friendly, the Cholderton Estate has three types of accommodation to choose from. Lapwing Hut is a cosy, heated shepherd’s hut perfect for couples. Bustard Hut is a cosy cabin built from reclaimed materials with a kingsize bed and bunks sleeping up to four. Both sit prettily in a wildflower meadow.
Also family-friendly (with bags of character), the Coach House is the estate’s Grade II-listed two-bedroom cottage, housed within a historic Victorian stable block.
Spaced a good distance from each other for privacy, all the accommodation at the Cholderton Estate has cooking facilities, ensuite bathrooms and their own outside spaces. And there’s log-fired hot tubs to wallow luxuriously in and fire pits to gather round after sunset. Glamping heaven.
On arrival, guests will find a welcome hamper of tasty essentials including marshmallows, homemade sourdough, organic milk, clipper teas and fairtrade coffee. For everything else, there’s a farm shop just five minutes’ walk away. If you don’t feel like cooking, The Malet Arms comes highly recommended, and makes for a nicely doable 45-minute walk or five minute drive.
Getting hitched? Cholderton Estate has the historic Grade II listed building used as a location for truly special, bespoke summer weddings for up to 150 guests (May – September) with exclusive use of the extensive grounds and Victorian Walled Garden.
Local or visitor, it’s worth following the Cholderton Estate on social (below) for seasonal pop-up events such as yoga retreats, wreath workshops and outdoor theatre.
