The Bugle, Hamble

A super historic pub at the mouth of the river Hamble with great views, bags of character and a fantastic locally-sourced menu.

A picture-perfect village with cobbled streets and river views, Hamble-le-rice is a gorgeous spot to come and watch the boats slip along the River Hamble and head out into Southampton Water.

At the heart of it, the Bugle is a seriously historic pub. Built in 1771 and Grade II listed, there’s a pretty terrace – spot on for soaking up those fabulous views, a spot of sun and a drink or three from a big selection of local real ales, wine and speciality spirits. Chin, chin.

Step inside and, after a recent major refit in 2022, you’ll find contemporary fixtures blended beautifully with traditional oak beams, exposed brick and woodwork, oak tables and a cosy open fire.

And so, to the food… The Bugle is big on local sourcing, selecting the best of the brilliant produce made in and around Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Think local meat, super-fresh fish straight off the boat and into the kitchen, Lyburn cheese, Jude’s Ice Cream, Mozzo Coffee, Isle of Wight tomatoes and loads more.

On the menu there’s small plates like crispy squid, ponzu chicken, pub favourites like hearty pies, ploughman’s and burgers and pub specialities like Cornfed chicken with hasselback potatoes.

Family and dog-friendly, there’s a great little kids’ menu and water and treats for thirsty pooches, too. Special occasion? The Bugle makes a great, intimate party venue, with a private dining room ‘The Captain’s Table’ which seats up to 10 people.
