The Bell Inn, Lyndhurst
A welcoming 18th Century family and dog-friendly coaching inn, this New Forest hideaway combines good food with bags of charm
Close to the coast with miles of beautiful New Forest countryside right on the doorstep, The Bell Inn is a brilliant spot for a weekend getaway. Flanked by two 18-hole courses that’ll suit golfers to a tee, the historic coaching inn is just a mile from the M27 but feels like a world away.
The pub came under new ownership in August 2021 and had a sympathetic refurb. Inside, oak-beamed ceilings, inglenook fireplaces, flagstone floors and other character features are blended with contemporary country interiors, creating a welcoming dining area.
The seasonal menu and specials in the restaurant make use of fantastic local produce and there’s a great selection of wines by the glass. Snag a table close to the roaring fire and stop by for a hearty Sunday lunch, perfect after a walk in the Forest.
From gin and beer workshops to themed wine nights with special tasting menus developed by Head Chef Jon Philips, there’s some great food and drink events throughout the year to look out for too.
Upstairs, there are 26 characterful rooms with creature comforts. Look out of the window and you’re likely treated to a regular procession of free-roaming ponies on the road below that also act as handy groundskeepers on the golf course.
A recent addition, The Bell Inn now offer beauty and wellbeing treatments for guests and visitors including massage and facials, as well as spa packages including a pamper day with one of the gorgeous afternoon teas the hotel is known for.
Family-friendly with a warm welcome for children and dedicated menu in the restaurant, conveniently, New Forest attractions like Paulton’s Park for Peppa Pig World, The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu and Longdown Activity Farm are all within easy reach of The Bell Inn.
When you’re out and about, look out for the odd pig or two, snuffling out acorns in the Autumn pannage season.
Don’t want to leave your four-legged family member behind? Not a problem – pet pooches are also very welcome in dog-friendly rooms and dining areas, with loads of beautiful New Forest walks to enjoy right on the doorstep and a sneaky jar of treats if you bark nicely. Pawfick.
