Palais des Vaches, Exbury
In the frame – Nick and Caroline de Rothschild’s gorgeous New Forest art gallery, wedding and events space.
Art galleries don’t get much more bucolic than Palais des Vaches. The magnificent former milking parlour, affectionately named the ‘Cow Palace’, was built by Nick de Rothschild’s Grandfather, Lionel de Rothschild, a century ago. It’s located at the end of a long gravel track, with magnificent views over the Beaulieu River to the Isle of Wight.
Dating back 150 years, but not used for farming since the 1970s, Nick and Caroline worked with a team of local builders, artisans and craftspeople to transform the ramshackle farm buildings into Palais des Vaches. The beautiful art gallery opened in 2021, comprising three inter-joining rooms that wrap around a beautiful courtyard garden featuring spectacular sculptures.
The gallery, which is also available as a private hire venue for weddings and celebrations, hosts exceptional local and award winning national artists with exhibitions on show throughout the year. It also features works by celebrated and lesser-known local artists, sculptors and ceramicists.
Mounted in collaboration with Lymington’s Coastal Gallery, the new Autumn Exhibition features work by actor and co-founder of The Murray Parish Trust, James Murray.
The Crown star has always been a keen hobby painter and achieved commercial success auctioning his work for the charity. Palais Des Vaches has a selection of works from his first solo exhibition, In Flow, a series of abstract paintings presented as a response to Constable’s work.
The Palais Des Vaches Autumn Exhibition also includes art by well-known creatives like Stewart Beckett, Michael Turner, John Illsley, sculptor Long Ly and venue owners Caroline and Nick de Rothschild.
Other highlights include vibrant paintings by Isle of Wight-based Steve Miles, sculpture by Andy Baerselman, stop-you-in-your-tracks figurative portraiture by Karl Rudziak and beautiful fine art by wildlife artist Kim Thompson.
The Palais des Vaches Autumn Exhibition opens on Friday 29 September.
