Chessell Pottery Café, Yarmouth

Surrounded by bike trails and circular countryside walks, we’re potty about this studio café in the beautiful West Wight.

Cake lovers rejoice! Just a 10-minute drive from Newport or Freshwater in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Chessell Pottery Café is one of the Island’s top spots for cream teas – not to mention a vast selection of delicious homemade cakes worthy of any self-respecting WI fete (lemon drizzle, cappuccino cake or Victoria sponge anyone?).

Inside, tables are spread out in a light airy room with outside seats in the pretty courtyard garden. If you feel like donning your walking boots, there are miles of stunning walks to head out on from here and you can also take the pooch as dogs are welcome. Refresh with locally-roasted coffee and free bottles of water or tuck into more substantial post-cycling cafe fare including delicious wraps, chips and bacon rolls.

If it’s pouring outside – or arts and crafts are more your thing anyway – pull up a stool at the friendly on-site studio, which has been firing its own earthernware pottery here since the 1970s, well before the popular café was added to the site.

Take inspiration from the glorious surroundings and paint your own blank Chessell Ware or Emma Bridgewater creation as a souvenir of your visit – or cheat and grab one from the onsite giftshop, we won’t tell….
