The A Bar, Portsmouth

Located by the Camber Docks in Old Portsmouth, The A Bar is a great place to eat amazing food, drink equally amazing wine and watch the boats go by.

Previously named Abarbistro, The A Bar is a popular casual restaurant right in the heart of Old Portsmouth. There’s been a pub or eatery on this spot as far back as 1784. And even though the name has changed many times over its long history, it’s remained a consistent sight in the ever-changing landscape of the city. Thankfully, the Napoleonic Wars are now over (phew) but it remains a great place to go and enjoy excellent seasonal food on the Camber Dock, opposite the fisherman’s port.

Open for lunch and dinner, The A Bar is a firm favourite with many locals who return time and again for the excellent food and paired back ambience.

Serving up people-pleasing dishes such as moules mariniere and the famous A Bar Burger (which comes served in a delicious brioche bun) the restaurant also has one of the best wine selections in the city. And no wonder – it even has a standalone wine merchants – Camber Wines – just upstairs.

The restaurant’s wood-burning pizza oven puts classic and cool toppings like spicy Korean pulled beef and nduja and ham hock on the menu all day Monday to Saturday. It also comes as a takeout – a tasty sofa supper if you happen to live in the ‘hood (lucky!).

Planning a get-together? The A Bar is a great spot for a lively or low-key celebration. Parties of up to 60 people can book for lunch, afternoon sittings or dinner, dining from a delicious, modern British menu filled with top-notch produce.
