Ready to get crafty?

Forget its naff '70s connotations, macramé is a big news in interiors and fashion this summer. Ready to get crafty?

Last spotted hanging on the wall in your grandma’s dining room in 1976, macramé is making a surprise comeback this summer (2m #macramé posts on Instagram and counting) and there’s far more to it than naff decorative owls this time round. And maybe that comeback isn’t so surprising after all, given the trend for all things arts’n’craftsy and boho.

Macramé plant pot holders are all over Etsy right now; the ruggedness of the ropes contrasting pleasingly with foliage. Anyone who has more advanced crafting skills than me (ie everyone) might be interested in Wool Couture’s DIY macramé kits – how cool is this deckchair? It’s just £59.99 plus a few hours of blood, sweat and tears (well, for me anyway).

When it comes to fashion, bags are the obvious choice for macramé. This one from Accessorize (£35) caught my eye, as did this jaunty yellow number from & Other Stories (£35). It comes with a handy built-in pouch so you don’t have to display your snotty tissues and Tampax to the world. If your budget is bigger, check out LA hipster brand Staud, a favourite of Alexa Chung (of course it is). I love their luxe spin on macramé, using it to encase their chic leather bucket bags (£310). And while we’re talking wish-list shopping, these aren’t strictly macramé but they do have a homespun vibe – these Souliers Martinez beauties are about a million miles from those trad granny woven leather shoes, thanks to their foxy pointy toe and sexy shaped gold mini stiletto. Money for old rope? No, just fashion, dahling.
