No. 1 George St
Nose to the ground for my Muddy readers, I first discovered No. 1 George Street just before Christmas on a work reccy (ahem, I may also have had my hair done at the nearby Twist, but Mr Muddy Hants need not know of this).
What a find and why had I never heard of it before? Only opening in November, it is still under-the-radar but not for much longer. Owner, Sara, is an ex-buyer for Mulberry and French Connection with a degree from the London College of Fashion under her belt, and it shows: think beautiful, easy-breezy scarves, gilets, ponchos, jewellery and homeware with just the right amount of quirk.
I love it all, but Wandering Bee’s line caught my eye: hand-embroidered scarves in rich jewel and earthen tones trimmed with fur that hangs just so and real leather clutches where understated design and quality combined with interesting blocks of orange and animal print make for something special and surprisingly go-with-everything — ideal for brightening up that jeans and grey cashmere uniform that us Hampshire muddies know and love. At £25, they’re a hot-dang good buy as well.
Elsewhere there’s Selfridges favourite, the ghetto-fabulous Bronx via Hampshire Sweet and Sour stationary; Nkuku’s vintage glass frames hung with sari strips; Moulin Rouge-stylee lace socks from Powder (Valentine’s Day anyone?); psychedelic joy from Jessica Russell Flint: who doesn’t want flamingos and a pineapple or two on their wash-bag?
If you can bear to give any of this delicious booty away then you’ll need a greetings card and there’s a good selection here. Liking the pared back, country-style furniture (oh go on then, shabby chic)? It’s all for sale, cleverly restored by Sara and colleague Kerry. The shop has great plans for the future including children’s and menswear lines. I will say no more, but next time you pass Kingsclere do treat yourself and do not expect to leave empty handed!
