Comfortable, waterproof and stylish too: oh hi there Trailbacks.
Muddy Cornwall’s Sophie gives us the low-down.
Confession time! Despite the name of this blog, I pretty much NEVER wear Stilettos. You see, I live in Cornwall… have kids… and spend half my life outside, trying to ignore the mizzle. So my winter footwear repertoire consists of wellies, slightly soggy high tops and an occasional hiking boot. In summer, I have beautiful, two-tone Salt-Waters and my beloved Birkenstock Arizonas to see me through but in the colder months, practicality always trumps style.
In fact, since I moved to Cornwall, I’ve been obsessed with tracking down the perfect outdoor boot. So imagine my delight when I discovered – in my home town – a brilliant new brand of unisex leather rigger boots that you can splash through puddles in all day long.
If you’ve got a dog, like gardening, love a beach walk… they won’t leave your feet, trust me.
Launched just before Christmas, Trailbacks are handcrafted, fully waterproof boots, inspired by hardworking rigger styles and designed for the great outdoors.
Founder Sandy Wallis had been hunting high and low for the right boot for daily dog walks with her beautiful Ridgeback Roscoe. Wellies were a bit uncomfy on longer walks and cold on really wintery days, trainers and hiking boots weren’t up to puddles and rock pools and she wanted a boot she could happily run errands, pick up the kids and go to the pub in.
Sandy came to rely on an old pair of rigger boots, which were bomb proof and easy to pull on and decided to go about making her own. After two years of development and rigorous testing, here they are in all their rugged glory. And Trailback’s early adopters have been putting them through their paces on the beaches and cliffs of Cornwall and beyond.
I’ve literally worn them every single day since I picked them up and have had countless comments not to mention a very envious husband (they’re fab on guys too). What’s not to love? They look great – a cool, rugged weekend style, in rich chocolate brown leather that goes with almost anything. They’re also super comfy and endlessly practical. Mine have waded happily through waterfalls, rivers and torrential rain showers.
Impressively technical in construction, Trailbacks are handmade in Spain from soft yet durable, treated leather and are designed to withstand the elements. They come armed with German waterproofing technology from Sympatex and Italian, Vibram Commando soles. They are also Goodyear welted and triple stitched for durability. Which basically means dry, comfy feet and boots that will last you for years, getting better with age.
Boot problem solved! I’m off for a walk (to the pub).
Sizes from 5 – 13, other sizes available via special order. Get yours at Trailback.co.uk
A note on sizing: Trailbacks are very generous – with plenty of room for thick winter socks and tucking trousers in. If you tend to be between sizes, I’d advise going down rather than up.
