<p>Tucked away in plain sight opposite Swanwick Marina in the River Hamble village of Lower Swanwick, <a href="https://harpers-southampton.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harper’s Steakhouse Southampton</a> is located at Fareham, six miles from Southampton. Formerly named The Navigator, it&#8217;s part of a small family of Harper’s Steakhouse restaurants belonging to the Upham Inns group. (Upham has sister venues in Haslemere, Surrey and Swindon, Wilts).</p>

<p>A real go‑to locally for casual celebrations and weekend feasting, the 22 comfortable rooms – some above the restaurant and others surrounding it – make Harpers Steakhouse Southampton a great bolthole for visitors, too.</p>



<p>Of course, there&#8217;s always steak on the menu here – from rump to ribeye and filet – and gourmet burgers, loaded sides and classic cocktails, too. But it’s not all American-comfort food. Harper&#8217;s also serves up Med-style starters, fish and epic hanging skewers. Not to mention slap-up Sunday roasts. </p>

<p>Friendly, unfussy dining with a friendly pub-meets-steakhouse vibe. Interiors mix rustic wood and contemporary touches, creating a buzzy atmosphere that spills out onto the terraces in warmer months. </p>

<p>Wooden tabletops sit with upholstered red and blue leather banquettes, leafy green plants and cow-themed art. When we visit on a Friday evening, its bustling with couples and groups of friends. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>



<p>In a nutshell, good food made with quality produce. Come for breakfast, brunch or dinner for stellar quality steaks sourced from grass fed, prime British cows.</p>

<p>A real favourite, Baja fish tacos with guacamole and pink onions are utterly delicious. This being a steakhouse, the wine list has a few more reds than whites but there&#8217;s a good choice by glass or bottle. My French Picpoul is fresh, fruity and decently priced &#8211; a perfect pour for seafood.</p>

<p>All concerns that my fish main course would be a bit lack lustre in a steak house were quickly assuaged. Grilled seabass melts in the mouth. It&#8217;s served with a flavoursome combo of grains, chimichurri and creamy ranch dressing and topped with delicious crispy strips of sweet potato.</p>

<p>Of course, it would be rude not to have steak in a steakhouse. Mr. Muddy gamely steps up and orders a tasty sirloin with fries and raves about the flavour.</p>

<p>After two generous courses, pud is a stretch. However, a loaded waffle with two spoons is worth every calorie of the sweet, sinful gluttony. </p>

<p>23 boutique rooms have everything you need for a comfortable night. (Including an espresso maker, Robert’s Radio and Bramley smellies in the bathroom). Ours, a bijou block-style room by the car park and garden terrace means there&#8217;s not far to flop after a big dinner. It&#8217;s on the small side but more than big enough for an overnight stay for two.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly-nbsp">KID-FRIENDLY?&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Harper’s Steakhouse Southampton has a solid menu of kid’s favourites at £14 for three courses and just £8 for a main for under 12s &#8211; plus the option for a roast on Sundays, which attracts lots of families in the restaurant. If you’re staying over, larger twin and Super King rooms can accommodate a child on a fold-out bed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-and-dogs-too">AND DOGS, TOO?</h2>



<p>With splendid coastal walks right on the doorstep, a canine menu and beds, blankets and welcome boxes for pets, Harper’s Steakhouse Southampton makes a great option for a dog-friendly stay.</p>

<p>Plenty to explore, from beautiful walks along the River Hamble to the<a href="https://thebrickworksmuseum.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Bursledon Brickworks Museum</a> to the nearby shops at <a href="https://www.whiteleyshopping.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Whiteley</a> and Hedge End. Nearby Southampton is just miles away. Or you&#8217;re a short 20-30 minute drive from <a href="https://www.thenewforest.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The New Forest</a> and it&#8217;s many attractions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disability-access">DISABILITY ACCESS</h2>



<p>There’s parking on site for guests at Harper’s Steakhouse Southampton, an accessible loo and step-free access to the ground floor restaurant. Ground floor rooms are available but there are no dedicated accessible rooms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for: </strong>A satisfying, big‑flavour meal in a lively setting by the water, a post-walk Sunday lunch and a scenic base outside the hustle and bustle of Southampton itself.</p>



<p><strong>Not for: </strong>If you’re keen to dine outdoors, traffic noise is inevitable. </p>



<p><strong>The damage: </strong>Good value for the quality. Starters are around £8-£10, mains around the £20 and steaks are £20-£40.
