Flipping Fabulous! Where to eat this Pancake Day
Can’t be bothered with the faff of Pancake Day? Drop the spatula and make a reservation at one of these eateries instead.
Southsea Beach Cafe, Portsmouth
While mostly known for its awesome brunches and cracking view over the sea, Southsea Beach Cafe is pulling out all the stops this Shrove Tuesday with a special pancake menu. No boring old lemon and sugar here, they’ve got Lemon Meringue Pie topped with lemon curd and shortbread crumb and the savoury Porkie, topped with chorizo, crispy bacon and parma ham crisps. Oooh, behave!
Steff’s Kitchen, Beaulieu
This is a little spot tucked away in the Fairweathers Garden Centre that is all about locally grown and sourced produce (a lot of which is grown over the road in Patrick’s Patch) with cosy New Forest-vibes. Rather than celebrating a single day they have a whole week of pancake-y goodness by serving up a special savoury offering topped with gruyere cheese, exotic mushrooms, spinach and herb cream sauce served with mixed salad. The garden centre is worth a visit while you’re there and has tonnes of local products and foodie bits to take home too.
La Creperie, Odiham
Every day is Pancake Day in Odiham thanks to La Creperie. Serving sweet pancakes and savoury galettes, this little sliver of Gallic goodness will delight any coeliacs (galettes are gluten-free, woohoo) and are also the perfect place to pick up one of my fave retro desserts, the Crepe Suzette. Even better every single pancake is under £6.25, so you’ll be able to afford a ticket on the Eurostar still.

If you like your pancakes, cheap, cheerful and surrounded by plenty of retail therapy, then Stakks is the answer. This Southampton pancake house is popular with influencers, locals and visitors alike. The menu is HUGE and would take years to work through, but features highlights such as the Eton Stakk (complete with fresh strawberries, crushed meringue and strawberry coulis), the savoury Lux Stakk (topped with smoked salmon, cream cheese and lemon and balsamic dressing) and super dinky Poffertjies (mini pancakes!) And you can add extras as well if you absolutely need six spoons of Nutella.
The Wellington Farm Shop, Hook
A surefire Muddy hit, Wellington Farmshop & Café is a rural gem offering simple and delicious food using quality local ingredients. This family-friendly cafe is an unpretentious affair (despite being owned by a grand old duke). Uplevel your Shreddies on Shrove Tuesday for the buckwheat pancakes with passionfruit and blueberries. You won’t regret it.
