<p>Tucked between Waterlooville and Petersfield, just off the A3 near Butser Hill<a href="https://www.thehampshirehog.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">, The Hampshire Hog</a> is one of those pubs that feels like it’s always been there – only now it’s had a smart glow-up. Once known as The Hog’s Lodge Inn, the current name nods both to Hampshire’s wild boar heritage and – boar-ing fact – an 18th Century nickname for locals (glad that one died out).</p>

<p>Following an extensive refurbishment by Fuller&#8217;s, unveiled in summer 2025, the bar, dining spaces, garden and all 20 bedrooms got a fresh new look. The result? Rustic charm with a contemporary edge. Think polished wood floors, a welcoming central bar, piggy nods dotted tastefully throughout and lie-in worthy boutique bedrooms.</p>

<p>We rock up early on a Friday evening and The Hampshire Hog is already humming. Locals at the bar and couples tucked into corners digging into supper. It’s everything you want from a proper country pub – but with polish. Think pig-themed décor (subtle, not gimmicky), warm wood floors, comfy armchairs by the fire and a large central bar serving up pints with gusto.</p>

<p>Dogs are welcomed both in the pub and if you book ahead as hotel guests. And if you’re talking the family for a country hike (or just want somewhere to land for Sunday Lunch) there’s a kids&#8217; menu and stack of games to try.</p>

<p>In summer, The Hampshire Hog’s plentiful outdoor seating overlooking countryside views really comes into its own and there’s a large marquee for parties and events, too.</p>

<p>The menu at The Hampshire Hog walks the line between pub classics and bistro fare. You’ll find fish and chips and burgers alongside seabass, venison sausages and chicken schnitzel. Seasonal, local produce is championed and there’s a solid line-up of cask ales and beers on tap.</p>



<p>We kick off with simple but stand-up starters: London Porter smoked salmon with crème fraîche, pickled cucumber and sourdough for me and chicken liver parfait with apple and cider chutney for Mr. Muddy. Both disappear at alarming speed.</p>

<p>For mains, Mr Muddy opts for the 8oz sirloin steak with Caesar salad and chips – hearty, well cooked and awarded his coveted seal of approval. I dive into a winter-warming individual fish pie with a cheesy golden lid and generous chunks of salmon. Comfort food done right.</p>



<p>Wine by the glass is very decent value. A Malbec from Mendoza is a perfect steak partner, while my Sauvignon Blanc from the Languedoc proves dangerously second-glass quaffable.</p>

<p>Puds? We try. Dark chocolate and London Pride sponge pudding with chocolate-malt sauce (you can taste the malt) is rich and indulgent. In honesty, it&#8217;s slightly too indulgent for me, especially tempered with sweet vanilla ice cream, but if you&#8217;re a serious pud-lover you might disagree. </p>



<p>After a whopper steak, Mr Muddy sensibly orders the mini sticky toffee pudding served with a cappuccino – a genius option more places should offer to curb full-blown gluttony.</p>

<p>A hidden gem of a hotel offer and very option for stays in the area, The Hampshire Hog’s boutique-style bedrooms sit just behind the pub with their own dedicated check-in area, so you can glide from bar to bed with ease. </p>



<p>Ours features a comfy king-size bed and a large walk-in shower with excellent pressure and heat. The tick-list of amenities includes a Nespresso machine, fridge with water and fresh milk and Bramley toiletries (always a win).</p>

<p>Accessibility is well covered too, with accessible parking, rooms, WC facilities, assistance dogs welcome and step-free access. If you’re travelling with the kids, under twos stay free in a cot or parents’ bed. Kids aged 2–12 can stay in an extra bed for £35 per night, including breakfast.</p>



<p>In the morning, breakfast is served in a large, light-filled dining room. There’s a help-yourself spread of cereals, fruit and flaky croissants, plus a solid line-up of cooked options. I went for my fail-safe avo and poached eggs on sourdough, while Mr Muddy plumped for the full English (a hearty plate that’d see you all the way up Butser Hill without a snack stop).</p>

The pub sits moments from the <a href="https://southdownsway.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">South Downs Way</a> and <a href="https://www.hants.gov.uk/thingstodo/countryparks/qecp/visit-us" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queen Elizabeth Country Park</a> – 2,000 acres of woodland, walking trails, cycle routes and play areas. Ideal for walkers, cyclists and weekend adventurers, there’s secure parking and even a bike repair station. They’ve thought of everything.</p>



<p>Climb Butser Hill – one of the highest points in Hampshire – for sweeping views, or head into <a href="https://hants.muddystilettos.co.uk/best-places-to-live/hampshire-iow/petersfield/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Petersfield</a> for its heathland, lake, independent shops and museum.</p>

<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Families and friends, post-walk refuels, cosy weekend stays near Petersfield, good-value rooms with comfort dialled up.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> Those seeking full-blown gastro – this is a country pub first and foremost. You’ll likely need a car (though Petersfield station is a do-able 15-minute taxi ride away).</p>



<p><strong>The damage: </strong>Good value, especially for a staycay. Rooms start at £99 for two adults, including breakfast and £150 for an overnight break with dinner. Starters are around £7-£12, mains are £15-30 and puds are £5-£9.</p>
