Vegetarian, flexitarian, meat-free Mondayer or committed vegan, plant-based food is officially on-trend. This National Vegetarian Week (16 – 22 May), here’s our pick of the best vegetarian and vegan cafes and restaurants around Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Baboo-Ji Vegetarian Kitchen, Southampton

Rave reviews all the way for the vegetarian and vegan Indian dishes at this happy-feeling, Insta-worthy restaurant, close to the Uni in the Portswood area of Southampton. Tasty street food-style starters, ‘social’ curries on sharing plates, cool cocktails and craft beers keep loyal locals coming back.

Rawberry, Winchester

Juice bar and café Rawberry scaled up from a popular market stall. Just off Winchester High Street with floor-to-ceiling windows, there’s loads of veggie and vegan food to tempt. Think healthy choccoberry porridge and toasted Hoxton sourdough, peanut butter & banana for brekkie. Come for quick-bite and tuck into post-shopping lunches like chipotle chickpea salad and sweet potato bagels. Detox smoothies – a specialty – are a perfect pick-me-up, especially when they’re sipped furtively behind a pair of oversized Raybans.

Offbeet New Forest, The Retreat, near Christchurch

Previously at Sunnyfields, Offbeet has now moved to The Retreat New Forest. The modern vegan menu and smart interiors are a great fit for this wellbeing hub, with its beautiful Airbnb rooms, yoga and gorgeous New Forest walks right on the doorstep. From cauliflower steaks to New Forest mushroom scallops, this is vegan food fine-dining style, all served up with imagination and flair.

The Beech Café, East Meon, East Hampshire

Come for a walk in this beautiful stretch of the South Downs and make a pit stop at the Beech Café. Part of a 55-acre Sustainability Centre, everything it dishes up (veggie and vegan) is homemade. Fruit and veg is grown on-site by the Fitzroy Group, a local charity supporting people with learning disabilities. Specials change seasonally but you can be sure of healthy winter warmers. Think hearty vegetable soups, Moroccan vegetable tagine with spiced vegetable quinoa and roasted cauliflower, kale and chickpea bhuna with brown rice. Yum.

Mangosteen, Southsea

One of Portsmouth’s newest restaurants, Mangosteen opened on the Palmerston Road in Southsea in late January 2022 to a sell-out crowd. In the following months, they’ve really kept the momentum going with an eco-aware menu of Asian, Brit and international dishes made using local, sustainable and organic produce. Look out for Vietnamese Pho, fresh summer rolls (above), butternut squash wellington and katsu curry.

Café Thrive, Southampton

Nutritious food that tastes good and sits firmly in the cheap eats bracket – no wonder this vegan cafe is a favourite with students and locals living and working in Southampton. Meat-free and super-tasty, meaty burgers are crowned with crispy onions. Or build your own salad box with veggies and dairy-free cheese. The coffee is tasty and organic, Fairtrade Foundation and Rainforest Alliance approved, ticking all the right sustainability boxes.

The Greenhouse, Fleet

Cafe by day, cosy restaurant by night, The Greenhouse in Fleet serves up veggie and vegan-friendly fare. The daytime menu includes organically-roasted coffee, cake sandwiches, soups and salads. Come the evening, meat-free burgers and curries of all descriptions sell-out fast on the specials board. Follow the whaft of frying onions and sniff out the team at the Fleet Market and other local events, where they can often be found selling meat-free burgers, bratwurst (above) and brownies.

Planet-friendly meals and zero-waste household products. Peach Vegan Café is part of a trend towards sustainable businesses on the Island. Winner of the Best Green Business in the 2021 Red Funnel Isle of Wight Awards, the menu is wide-ranging. Come for full vegan brekkies and pancakes, lunch on katsu curry or grab one of the tasty homemade cakes.
