Yes Vegan! 5 marvellous meat-free menus
Searching for sustainable sustenance? We’ve got you covered this World Vegan Day with our handpicked selection of great vegan eateries
No longer the sole preserve of the hippie contingent, plant-based food is officially on-trend. Whether you’re a committed vegan or meat-free Mondayer, this World Vegan Day (Sunday 1 Nov, FYI), why not try out one of Hampshire’s best plant-based restaurants or cool cafés?
Juice bar and café Rawberry scaled up from a popular market stall. Just off Winchester High Street with floor-to-ceiling windows, there’s a deceptively healthy choccoberry porridge or toasted Hoxton sourdough, peanut butter and banana for brekkie and quick-bite lunches like chipotle chickpea salad or sweet potato bagels. Detox smoothies – a specialty – are a perfect pick-me-up, especially when sipped furtively behind a pair of oversized Raybans.
Offbeet New Forest, Totton
Forget the rainbow dreadlocks, this bright conservatory-style restaurant is altogether more 21st-century vegan, with smart, plant-based tucker and raw cakes dished up with frothy oat-milk mochas. Fans rave about signature dishes like creamy curried gnocchi and Vietnamese mushroom noodle salad. Located on Sunnyfields Farm near Southampton, it’s got a cookery school too, where you can try your hand at everything from quick, plant-based meals to show-stopping vegan bakes.
A small café with a big rep for its vegan burgers, Earth dishes up loaded sandwiches, messy ‘Boris Johnson’ sweet potato fries and other ethical eats with a self-styled ‘dirty vegan’ vibe we can really get behind. Look out Hampshire: Earth is on the move. It’s just converted a new van, Earth in Orbit, with its own Insta account.
The Beech Café, East Meon
Come for a walk in this beautiful stretch of the South Downs and make a pit stop at the Beech Café, part of a 55-acre Sustainability Centre. Everything it dishes up (veggie and vegan) is homemade, from bread and chutney to vegan cake. Fruit and veg is grown on-site by the Fitzroy Group, a local charity supporting people with learning disabilities. Specials change seasonally but at this time of year expect warming, autumnal dishes like Moroccan vegetable tagine with spiced vegetable quinoa or roasted cauliflower, kale and chickpea bhuna with tarka dhal and brown rice.
PEACH Vegan café, Newport, Isle of Wight
Serving planet-friendly meals alongside zero-waste household products, Peach Vegan Café is part of a growing movement of small South Coast businesses with a sustainable living focus. It’s pretty unique on the Island and has a lot of local converts, with full vegan brekkies, pancakes and katsu curry popular with flexitarian diners and PEACH’s committed vegan followers.
