Afternoon tea at Chewton Glen is always an occasion. Tuck into luxurious smoked salmon and turkey, cranberry and chestnut stuffing finger sandwiches. The Grand Café, Southampton, until Fri 31 Dec

Modern opulence close to the docks in a historic building, once the hotel of choice for passengers on luxury liners heading for the New World. Look out for the Smoked Salmon with Beetroot Crème Fraiche sandwiches and chocolate brownies. If, like us, you end up defeated, ask nicely and they’ll give you goodie box. First class. £25pp. Add a glass of prosecco for £5pp and champagne for £10pp.

New Park Manor, New Forest, until Wed 22 Dec
