Hattingley Valley Wines
Muddy says: Park that prosecco, we’re English Sparkling Wine girls all the way. Curious? Hattingley Valley produces some of the world’s finest fizz… from grapes grown on Hampshire chalk. #proud
No really. Decanter Magazine recently ranked the Alresford vineyard’s 2011 Kings Cuvée world number one*, quite some feat for a vineyard yet to celebrate its tenth birthday.
The Cellar Door
What we love about Hattingley is the atmosphere at the cellar door. It’s passionate, welcoming and youthful; if you’ve ever visited a New World vineyard, you’ll know what we mean.
Glamorous on the outside it may be, but on the inside winemaking is tough. A late-harvest frost might wipe out your crop and the margins are small especially for our plucky Hampshire vineyards who don’t have the profile of your Moët or your Veuve. Yet, the world is waking up to the brilliant sparkling wine produced right here in the South East (we’re on the same chalk seam as Champagne folks).
But still, you need to be resilient and, more than anything passionate, to pull it off. When needs-must during harvest time the whole Hattingley team, from cellar hand to lab assistant, grubs-in with the delicate process of picking and, come midnight, you’ll find head winemaker, Emma Rice, still clambering on machinery, checking the grapes and performing the part-art, part-science, all highly-skilled jiggery pokery that creates world-class wine.
Tasting & Events
The team runs vineyard tours for the public so you can hear the stories, visit the vines, then taste the wine: one of the best ways to sample this special, local fizz.
Also keep an eye out for indoor and outdoor events (can you imagine anywhere more lovely on a British summer’s evening?), plus afternoon teas, civilised hen and stag dos and a private function room.
