7 outdoor cinemas to book now

Pass the popcorn! Here’s where to find fab outdoor cinema movie screenings around Hampshire this summer.

Ticket Cinema, Bordon

A new outdoor cinema in East Hants, Ticket Cinema replaces Nightflix at Bordon’s Prince Phillip Park. Drive-in and watch from the car or take a deckchair seat for new blockbuster releases like Downton Abbey (Fri 20 – Thurs 26 May) and the much-anticipated, critic-approved Top Gun: Maverick (Fri 10 – Mon 23 June).

Avington Park, near Winchester

The grand country manor and wedding venue just east of Winchester plays host to Summer Screens this June. Head here for Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast (Thurs 16 June) and Steven Spielberg’s 2021 film West Side Story (Fri 17 June). There’s a bar to grab drinks and cinema snacks from and parking. Bring your own chair or pre-book a deckchair or beanbag.

The Mansion at Coldeast, Fareham

Reopened in 2021 after multi-million-pound refurb, this splendid Victorian mansion apartment-hotel and restaurant is set in acres of landscaped grounds and woodland by the river Hamble. On Fri 24 – Sun 26 June it has a special Open Cinema Weekend with Horizon Cinema. Grab a camping chair or blanket and watch The Greatest Showman, Mamma Mia or Bohemian Rhapsody on a giant cinema screen under the moonlight.

Mountbatten Centre, Hilsea, Portsmouth

Bring a picnic or tuck into hot food and drinks from the on-site bar at the Mountbatten Centre in Hilsea. Resident at the park and leisure centre site from Fri 8 – Sun 10 July, The Adventure Cinema will screen West Side Story, Bridget Jones’ Diary, Mamma Mia!, Encanto and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The Vyne, near Basingstoke

Outdoor movie screenings at this glorious National Trust big hitter always sell out fast. So go quickly to book for West Side Story (Fri 15 July); Mamma Mia! (Sat 16 July) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Sun 17 July).

Royal Victoria Country Park, Southampton

Come for sunset, grab a drink from the bar and settle in with a picnic beside Netley Abbey. Summer Screens will show Spider-Man, No Way Home (Thurs 28 July); West Side Story (Fri 29 July) and Mamma Mia (Sat 30 July).

Winchester College, Winchester

Itself a well-known filming location, for the first time this summer, the ancient school plays host to a pop-up outdoor cinema, starting with a special 10th anniversary screening of Tom Hoopers sweeping epic musical, Les Miserables, on Wed 10 Aug. It’ll be followed by the latest Bond movie, No Time to Die, on Thurs 11 Aug (hankies at the ready) and West Side Story on Fri 12 Aug.
